Hints of Wild Flowers and Herbs

Cultivated and crafted on La Furtuna Estate, our Biancolilla Centinara organic Italian extra virgin olive oil hosts medium fluidity with medium-green fruitiness and hints of wild herbs and dried flowers. Offering powerfully balanced bitterness and pungency, this single-origin olive oil shares the aroma of tomato, fresh grass, almond and artichoke and pairs well with fresh mozzarella or bistecca alla fiorentina, and is the best Italian olive oil for a fresh peach salad.

Rediscovering Heritage Through Artisan Olive Oil

Rediscovered by our botanist at La Furtuna Estate, the rare Biancolilla Centinara olive now thrives once more, producing an organic, single-origin extra virgin olive oil found exclusively on our farm.

Meaning “ancient white lilac,” the Biancolilla Centinara tree lends to a very complex and layered artisan olive oil that couples together two traditional Sicilian olive varietals, the Biancolilla and the Nocellara del Belice. Discover bliss in the best Italian olive oil, grown, pressed, and bottled all at La Furtuna Estate.

FAQs

What is extra virgin olive oil?

Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is the highest quality olive oil, made by cold-pressing fresh olives to preserve flavor and nutrients. It has a fresh, pungent taste and is rich in healthy monounsaturated fats and polyphenols that are a key part of the Mediterranean diet’s benefits.

What should I look for when selecting an extra virgin olive oil?

When choosing an extra virgin olive oil, look for a harvest date, origin details, and packaging. Harvest dates indicate when the olives used in the oil were harvested. You want to purchase from the most recent harvest for freshness and flavor quality. Olives from Sicily are harvested in September through November, and are cold pressed within 24 hours of picking.

Understanding where your olive oil comes from often speaks to the care, craft, and quality in the bottle. When you see phrases such as single origin or single source, this means just that, that it comes from one source or place. Looking for more specifics, such as country of origin, region, or even down to the farm name, can give you further insight into where the olives were grown and the oil produced.

Packaging should be in dark glass or tin to protect it from light and preserve flavor.

What are polyphenols?

Polyphenols are natural antioxidants found in olive oil that help protect the body from damage. They support heart health, reduce inflammation, and help fight harmful free radicals. Polyphenols may also aid digestion, help balance blood sugar levels, and lower the risk of chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes.

What is the harvest date for this olive oil?

You can find the harvest date printed on all our bottles of olive oil. You ideally want to purchase from the most recent harvest for freshness and quality flavor. Olives from Sicily are harvested in September through November. We are currently selling our 2024 harvest.

Can I cook with extra virgin olive oil?

Yes, you can cook with any of our olive oils. All of our oils are suitable for cooking, baking, and sautéing. That said, using them as finishing oils allows you to fully enjoy their nuanced flavors. Our Everyday Olive Oil is especially versatile and well suited for your daily kitchen needs, while our estate extra virgin olive oils are delicious both for cooking and for finishing dishes, where their complex flavors can really shine.

How should I store my olive oil?

Olive oil should be stored away from heat and light to maintain freshness. Keep your bottle tightly sealed, in a cool, dark place like a pantry or cupboard. Avoid storing your olive oil near the stove or in clear glass.

How long will olive oil last with proper storage?

When stored properly and unopened, olive oil can last for years. We print best buy dates on every bottle to use for peak flavor, though while it may lose some freshness and flavor beyond this date, it remains safe and healthy to use. For the best taste, we recommend enjoying it generously 2-3 months after opening , as olive oil does not improve with age like wine.

Where does your olive oil come from?

Our estate extra virgin olive oil comes from our farm, La Furtuna, in Corleone, Sicily. As part of our single-estate collection, it is made entirely on our farm, from harvest to bottle within 24 hours. We grow only organic, native Sicilian olives to produce our extra virgin olive oils.

Why are your 3 liter olive oils packaged in plastic?

Our 3 liter olive oils are packaged in a BPA free, aluminum lined bag inside a protective box to keep the oil fresh. This packaging limits exposure to air, which helps prevent oxidation and preserves flavor over time. With large formats, opening a single glass bottle or tin would expose all of the oil to oxygen each time it’s used. For everyday use, we recommend decanting small amounts into a carafe as needed.
