We use only the highest quality ingredients. Bona Furtuna is a harmonious 350-hectare organic farm that celebrates premium, organic fare to enrich biodiversity, promote sustainable farming and preserve heritage food. We source all of our herbs, tomatoes, and olives directly from La Furtuna Estate. Our pastas and salts are produced in collaboration with other sustainable, organic Sicilian producers.  Our Biscotti, Balsamic Vinegars and Porcini Mushrooms are produced in collaboration with other sustainable Italian producers.

At Bona Furtuna, we share a devout philanthropy to give back to Sicily’s land and people. Working with other Sicilian producers, such as an artisan salt producer and a pasta maker with over 100 years of experience, is one way that supports our philanthropy.

Yes, our EVOO Biancolilla Centinara and Heritage Blend continue to be our best selling Olive Oils.

Our W rating is about 260.

We have both single varietal olive oils (Biancolilla Centinara and Passulunara) and olive oil blends (Heritage Blend, Forte, Riserva di Nonna Rosa, and Chef’s Blend).

Our products are sourced from all different regions of Italy.  The majority of our products come from Sicily and southern Italy.

All of our items are gluten-free with the exception of our pastas and biscotti.

For customers with a gluten sensitivity, we often hear from customers that our pastas do not cause the uncomfortable bloating issues that they usually experience with other pasta brands. This is due to the ancient Sicilian wheat varieties, unchanged for centuries, that we use in our pasta.

All of our products are GMO-free.  A majority of our products are certified organic. The only exceptions are our Balsamic Vinegars, 100% Sea Salt, Porcini Mushrooms, and Pistachios, all of which are produced using natural methods but are not certified organic.

Terroir will be a big factor here depending on soil and climate. One of the main differences is the varietal of olive. California has mission olives, of which the main varieties used are Spanish and Greek. Most California olive oil uses Arbequina (Spain), Arbosana (Spain), and Koroneiki (Greek) olives, while some use Italian varieties of Frantoio and Leccino. Spain is known for being the largest olive oil producing state in the world, mainly due to the types of olives that can be grown in high density groves. In addition to the two varieties above they are known for Picqual (which makes up about 25% of all olive oil production in the world) and Hojiblanca. These olives all tend to be a bit smaller than other varieties. Italians have a multitude of different olives that are different depending on the region. The main ones include Frantoio, Leccino, Coratina, Itrana, & Nocellara del Belice. These tend to vary in pungency when making olive oil, ranging from delicate to robust. At Bona Furtuna we use heirloom organic Sicilian olive varietals that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. These varietals include Biancolilla Centinara, Tonda Iblea, Cerasuola, and Passulunara.

We do not recommend freezing olive oil. Freezing oils can cause the valuable fats to rupture, creating unwanted flavors when thawed. Refrigeration is acceptable but generally not necessary.

Product shelf life depends on the product but you can expect a shelf life of at least nine months, if not more, depending on the product.  All products have a best by date on the packaging.

As an organic farm, we are committed to natural pest management practices that consider all living organisms on the farm. Pesticide and herbicide usage in agricultural practices is extremely harmful to bee populations, as bees can lose their way back to hives more easily, become weak and sick, and eventually lead to colony collapse.
