Certified B Corp: What Does It Mean?

Bona Furtuna was founded on a dream of preserving our founders’ heritage. Under the helm of our Chief Scientist and Master Botanist Pasquale “Mimmo” Marino, we worked with the land and it embraced us to reveal a story millennia old. We poured our efforts into learning from the land, sustainably sharing its bounty, and working closely with the local community to provide a positive impact through employment opportunities. Over time, our desire to preserve the heritage of our land and community through sustainable efforts expanded beyond the borders of our farm to include those of like-minded farmers, artisans, and producers throughout Italy.

Driven by our impact on our farm, in our growing communities, on our employees, on our customers, and our environment, from the beginning we were attuned to businesses focused on achieving similar outcomes. Our desire to join a global network of corporations using business as a force for good fueled us to apply for B Corp certification, which we proudly received at the beginning of 2022.

What is a Certified B Corporation? B Corporations, or B Corps for short, are for-profit companies that are committed to the triple bottom line: environmental, social and economic. We’re legally bound to work towards a net positive approach in all aspects when operating a business. Certified B Corps meet the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency, and a legal commitment of accountability to all stakeholders.

To become certified, each business must undergo a rigorous assessment to demonstrate they meet the high standards set for all B Corps. Once passed, the business must continue and uphold its efforts, year after year, to maintain the certification. Today, there are 6,377 Certified B Corporations spread throughout 89 countries within 160 industries, and we’re honored to be included in this incredible community alongside other companies like Avocado Green Mattress, Counter Culture Coffee, Minna Goods, Patagonia, and so many more incredible brands.

Built on a foundation of operating with positive impact, as we continue to grow we do so with great care. We work tirelessly to uphold organic practices, minimize waste and prioritize partnerships with both small producers and other brands who demonstrate a similar brand ethos.

For our high social and environmental impact, in addition to continuing our commitment towards environmental awareness and stewardship in everyday operations, our focused efforts are both national and international. We are a proud sustaining member of 1% for the Planet, where we donate at least 1% of our annual sales towards a variety of environmental and community oriented organizations. As a member of that organization, we support Slow Food’s Monti Sicani chapter, where we've helped to plant over 2,500 rare, heirloom olive trees throughout the region. We're also proud supporters of Slow Food's Teton Valley based chapter, where we've had the opportunity to aid in youth education surrounding the importance of preserving heirloom plants, and organic agriculture in our communities

Throughout the month of March, make sure to follow Bona Furtuna on Instagram and Facebook to learn more about our initiatives and other companies who strive to achieve best practices year after year.
