Festino di Santa Rosalia
Every year in July Sicily celebrates the Festino di Santa Rosalia, or Feast of Saint Rosalia, one of the biggest holidays of the year in Sicily.
As the legend goes, Sicily’s prayers were answered when San Giuseppe, Sicily’s patron saint of artisans, ended a legendary drought in Medieval Sicily. To honor him, St. Joseph’s Day is celebrated every March 19th with a feast that includes Mafaldine di San Giuseppe (recipe included with collection). We like to add a splash of extraordinary Fennel Pollen to this flavorful dish in recognition of the wild fennel that has been a staple for many Sicilians.
Crafted at a single source on La Furtuna Estate in the Sicani Mountain region, our Biancolilla Centinara 100% organic artisan olive oil hosts medium fluidity, with medium-green fruitiness and hints of wild herbs and dried flowers.
Offering powerfully balanced bitterness and pungency, this single-origin Italian olive oil shares the aroma of tomato, fresh grass, almond and artichoke.
Imagine isolating a fennel seed, making it significantly sweeter and a hundred times more intense to the palate. Taste subtle hints of hay, honey and citrus balanced with zings of freshly ground anise in our Italian fennel pollen seasoning. To the nose, the aroma is musty with deep floral notes. The most potent form of fennel, the pollen gives a sense of terroir to a dish and instantly elevates flavor.
With a touch of sweetness, herbal hints, sunkissed grain, and ascents of cinnamon, Bona Furtuna Mafaldine provides a great al dente texture and elastic structure. Representative to what humans have been eating for thousands of years and easy for digestion, feel the nutritional benefits of ancient grain pasta in every bite. In Sicily, Mafaldine is often used in “Timballo,” an Italian baked dish, or prepared with swordfish or anchovies, tomato paste, pine nuts, and raisins. For a citrus twist, try “Mafaldine with Shrimp and Lemon.”
The perfect touch when grilling white meats and simply sensational on vegetables, the 100% organic Sicilian Sea Salt and Herb Blend sources air-dried oregano, hand-picked lemon peel and black pepper from the fields of La Furtuna Estate. Find yourself hypnotized by notes of zesty citrus and subtle heat from crisp peppercorn in one of our favorite herbed sea salt blends.
St. Joseph's Day (Giorno di San Giuseppe) is celebrated in Sicily with parades and feasts in Sicily. Traditional pastries like sfingi di San Guiseppe are a must. Our collection in honor of this holiday features some favorites harvested from our farm (Biancolilla EVOO and Wild Foraged Fennel Pollen), Sicilian Mafaldine pasta and an herbaceous Trapani Sea Salt infusion.
Amazing, I love the salts and for me is the best olive oil
